Antique Early 18th Century English Carved Oak Three-Panel Chest

An antique English carved oak three-panel chest has beautiful patina from the centuries of use. The façade has a detailed carved, scrolled-foliate frieze with the initials “GS” on the lock plate cutout as well as diamond motifs on the lower three panels. The chest sits on stile legs. Additional markings are on the back. The upper molding of the right side is incised “RB” twice with the same mark on the front, right stile. The pegged, moritse-and-tenon case features a rectangular, three-panel lid with cotter pin hinges opening to a vacant interior.

This chest wears its age proudly - little wobbly; small hole on top in corner; small loss to top of front, left stile on outer edge; missing latch on lid & lock plate; former worming; other scattered surface wear, shrinkage cracks, imperfections.
